The Spirit of Life

'So who is this God of Jesus?  He is the healing power which Jesus brought to the poor and sick, sinners and dying.  He is the God of the crucified Jesus, who was the victim of power.  He is the liberating energy that raised Jesus from the dead and led him into eternal life. God is the one 'who raised Jesus from the dead': that is the New Testaments definition of God...God is the liberator - there from the power of one of history's tyrants, the Pharaoh, here
from the tyrant over history, death; there he frees people for 'the land flowing with milk and honey', here for the new creation of all things for the eternal life in which death shall be no more. There the experience of God is bound up with Exodus experience, here with the experience of resurrection...In every celebration of the Lord's Supper Christ's people remember the way Christ took to death, and his raising from death; and in this future of Christ that is made present to them, they experience their own, immeasurable liberty: 'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom' (2 Corinthians 3:17).
