I'm reading through Saint Augustine's 'Confessions' for Lent.  Saint Augustine was born in 354 AD and died in 430 AD.

'You, my God, are supreme, utmost in goodness, mightiest and all powerful, most merciful and most just.  You are the most hidden from us and yet the most present amongst us, the most beautiful and yet the most strong, ever enduring and yet we cannot comprehend you.  You are unchangeable and yet you change all things...Whisper in my ear, I am here to save you.  Speak so that I may hear your words. My heart has ears ready to hear you, Lord.  Open them wide and whisper in my ear I am here to save you.  I shall hear your voice and make haste to clasp you to myself.'

Confessions, 4, 5 p23-24 (1961)
